Why Critical Art Education?

I love art, but when I decided to be an art teacher I felt like I was leaving my love for learning, writing, and academics behind. I loved reading and learning about improving education and pedagogy but it was always tinged with disappointment that it didn’t apply to me and I wouldn’t really get to use it to make a difference. When I started doing the research that led to “Critical Art Education” I realized how wrong I was! Not only did ideas like Critical Pedagogy have an essential place in the art room, there are actually many ways that the art room was the perfect place for them! This discovery and the continuing research made me more excited then ever to teach, bringing my passion for art and critical education together, and I hope it can inspire you to bring Critical Art Education into your classroom too.

My name is Rose Cushwa and I’m an artist, nanny, and future educator. I’m passionate about a lot of things, but especially art and education and where they come together. I’m focused on learning as much as I can about how to be the best art teacher possible through Critical Pedagogy, Culturally Responsive Education, and from current art educators, with the knowledge that I will always have so much more to learn once I get into the classroom.
